What goes into your estimate

We calculate six separate heads of compensation and apply three legally recognised reductions to arrive at your net figure. This is a carefully considered estimate and not a number picked from thin air.

What we calculate
  • Compensation for your hearing loss
Based on the severity of your condition and which ears are affected, using current judicial guidelines.
  • Compensation for your tinnitus
Calculated separately from hearing loss, reflecting the additional impact on your daily life.
  • Cost of hearing aids past and future
What you have spent and what you will need to spend on private hearing aids throughout your life.
  • Earnings you have or will miss out on
The impact of your hearing loss on your career including jobs not applied for, promotions missed, and reduced earning capacity.
  • Pension contributions you have or will miss
Pension loss flowing directly from your reduced earnings over your working life.
Total before reductionsGross estimate
What we reduce by
  • Reduction for service before 1987
Crown immunity applied automatically based on the proportion of your service that fell before 15 May 1987, when the law changed.
  • MOD standard settlement reduction
The Matrix discount, an agreed reduction under the MOD settlement framework, based on when you left service.
  • Reduction to reflect the risk of going to court
A standard fixed reduction applied to all estimates to reflect the uncertainty inherent in any legal case. This does not mean you will go to court.

These reductions are applied in sequence to your gross estimate to produce your net figure. They are the same reductions a solicitor would apply when preparing a formal schedule of loss.
